Lili, Lala, and Lila Want to Teach Tifany Restavek How to Read and Write, But First They have to Rescue Her

Three adventurous and well-off Haitian girls, Lili, Lala, and Lila set out to rescue a servant girl named Tifani Restavèk from a mean neighbor family who mistreats her and makes her do all kinds of forced labor while their own children, especially KansonFè IronPants, tease her while watching her work her heart out in the stiffling Caribbean sun. These three girls go to private catholic schools in Port-au-Prince. Way before the quake that hit Haiti, the three girls devise a plan to start reading stories to Tifani while she stands by the fence. They want to teach her to read and write. In general, Restaveks (servant boys and girls whose parents can not take care of them and economically forced to let them go live with well-off city dwellers) do not expect to be treated well and go to school. Will these girls ever even get close to Tifani to tell her about their plans? A miracle would have to happen first. All of Tifani’s work is for nothing. Her only reward is more work and belittling. Tifani can not go to school or even take reading and writing lessons. Her supervisors, the Mesye and Madanm of the house would not let that happen. Then, on January 12, 2010, a 7.1 quake hit and destroyed Port-au-Prince and its nearby communities in less than 35 seconds. Lili, Lala and Lila’s mission changes. They set out to find and rescue Tifani from under the mountains of rubble. Will they ever find her alive? Is the quake the miracle that will make her supervisors, Mesye and Madanm KansonFè, set her free? Tifani may as well find her freedom right in the midst of the rubble that covers her frail body.

Haitian Creole Notes: Nòt Kreyòl: On New Year’s Day, it is appropriate to wish Haitian friends prosperity and longevity. It is something you can get accustomed to. Here is what you will say:

Prosperity and longevity to you and your family! Pwosperite ak lonjevite pou tout fanmi ou!

Premye Janvye se yon jou espesyal pou tout Ayisyen. Se jou sa-a yo manje soup joumou. Se jou endepandans Ayisyen. Poukisa se soup joumou?

Anvan Ayiti pran endepandans li, esklav Sen Domeng yo pa-t gen dwa manje oswa bwè soup joumou. Kolon Fransè yo te konsidere soup joumou yon manje espesyal. Aprè Ayiti pran endepandans li an 1804, Desalin deklare tout Ayisyen gen dwa manje soup joumou.

January 1st is a special day for all Haitians. On this day, they consume squash soup. It is Haitians’ independence day. Why squash soup?

Before Haiti became independent, the slaves of St. Domingue were not allowed to consume squash soup which was considered a delicacy by the French colonists. After Haiti became independent in 1804, Dessalines declared that all Haitians can have squash soup.

Se – to be

We use “se” to link a subject with a noun. For example: Jan se zanmi-m – John is my friend; Se chen Manno-a – It is Manno’s dog; Se kabrit Bòs Jak – It is master craftsman Jack’s goat.

Pyebwa sa-a se yon pye zaboka – This is an avocado tree

Fifi se yon bon doktè – Fifi is a good doctor

Li s-on bon moun – He/she is a good person (Note that se yon becomes s-on here in this sentence). You can also omit “li” at the beginning of the sentence. Just say: Se yon (S-on) bon moun. This is to save time. Liaisons or contractions exist to save time and build language speed in Kreyol.

Ye – to be

We usually use “ye” at the end of a sentence. It is exclusively used in that position.

Take a look at these two sentences:

Mwen se Kanadyen – I am Canadian

Se Kanadyen mwen ye – I am Canadian. (In the second sentence, the speaker wants to emphasize his /her nationality as if a special message needs to be conveyed and understood by the listener).

Both sentences are correct. Remember that “ye” is always used at the end of the sentence. Make sure you do not confuse “ye” to be with “Yè” which stands for yesterday.

My mother and sisters usually soak these cubes for an hour or so in sour orange marinade. Then they slow-roast them until they become tender. Then they fry them in oil until they look caramelized. Yummy! Se koupe dwèt!

(While cooking and sharing Haitian foods with my college roommates from Central America and South America, I learned many things. I made a few discoveries. When we compared our foodstuffs, we found out they are just the same things but they come with different names)

For example: Start with these two ingredients, green plantains, not the bananas we eat!

Vocabulary - Vocabulaire - Mo Nouvo (New words)

Bannann Peze - Haitian twice-fried green plantains (Use the green plantains to make bannann peze, not the bananas)
Bananes Pesées (French).

Fig (banana) ak Bannann (green plantains)

My Central American, Peruvian, Venezuelan College mates helped me get this information:
Tostones is bannann peze. It is a snack or side dish in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Patacones is bannann peze in some Central American countries. My Venezuelan friend told me it is known as Patacones there.
Notes: You will need a tostonera to flatten the plantains before their second frying. According to my Dominican friend, any flat surface, a glass or a small plate will do too. I have even seen her using a bowl to flatten the plantain chunks.

An Exquisite Taste Of Haiti: Cooking with Cornmeal to Prepare Doukounou (Cornmeal Pudding)

Doukounou or Cornmeal Pudding; Tonmtonm or Puree of Breadfruit

Doukounou is what is called Cornmeal pudding in English. Since the doukounou is not sweet or savory, we usually eat it with a sweet sauce.

How do we make our doukounou?

We wrap small portions of a thick mixture of cornmeal in banana leaves. Then we steamed them for about 28-35 minutes.

What ingredients do we need to make enough doukounou or Cornmeal pudding for 6 or people?

We need the following ingredients: 1 medium cup of yellow cornmeal, 2 cups of whole milk, 2 cups of evaporated milk, 1 cup of fresh coconut milk, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 cup of whipping cream, 1 large egg beaten, 1 teaspoon puree vanilla extract.

Mix all of the above.

Make sure you grease the insert of the pudding mold with enough margarine.

Once upon a time a little boy named Tijan decided to learn how to read and write. Tijan was born in a little village located next to Léogâne, Haiti, on top of a huge mountain called Katwen. He is Mrs. Altidor’s second child. He has an older sister who is living with her father’s relatives. Tijan’s older sister’s name is Marijo. Tijan does not have the same father as Marijo. In fact, he does not know his father. Marijo’s father has sent her to school. Tijan does not have a parent who can send him to school.

Every year, he gets very sad when he sees his older sister’s new uniform, shoes, socks, books and other supplies. Tijan would like to learn how to read and write too but his father did not recognize him.

Mrs. Altidor can not help Tijan find his father. She does not know the identity of her son’s father. Mrs. Altidor does not remember anything at all because she is always drunk. She enjoys drinking Tafia (a strong alcoholic beverage in Haiti), alcohol, and smoking cigarettes. When she earns any money, she wastes it in beverages, junk food, and fried goodies. That is why Marijo’s father had taken her away from her.

Tijan is ten years old now. His friends have started to tease him and to call him names such as “idiot, dumb beast, animal.” They thought he was imbecile. However, he knows he is not dumb. He has a plan. “If only the plan can work, I will be able to show everybody that I am an intelligent guy.”

That is how Tijan decided to walk to the residence of his godfather who was living in the city of Léogâne. His godfather had a lot of contacts in town. He has sent all of his children to school. Mr. Bonifas took pity of Tijan who broke out crying and complaining.

“It looks like you are moving away, Tijan!” remarked Mr. Bonifas as he spotted him. “Where is your mother? Why did she not come with you?”
“Godfather, I want to live with you. I can not take it any longer up in the mountain,” Tijan replied. “Manman-m, my mother does not want to do anything for me. All the money she earns goes to her alcohol. I am ten years old. I do not know how to read and write.”
Surprised, Mr. Bonifas asked, “Your mother has not sent you to school?”
“No. She is drunk all the time. She does not have a dry day. She has no time to think about such things.”
“Your mother has never told you about your father.”
“No. Do you know my father? You know I am fatherless. Marijo has a father. She is living at her grandparents’ home.”
Mr. Bonifas looked at his eyes. He did not utter a word. Neither did he try to answer his question or reveal his father’s identity.
“What were you doing during all these years?”
“Every year I thought my mother was going to send me to school. But she never had time to do that.”
Mr. Bonifas became meditative. He was taken aback by his godson’s declarations. He thought Tijan had the same providing father as his older sister, Marijo.
“Alcohol is a bad thing. It is a vice. The woman neglected her responsibility because of tafia. That is what is destroying the country.”

Mr. Bonifas opened the back door of the store. He took the little box of clothes and sandals that Tijan had carried. That was all his possession. He placed it in a room behind the counter. He said, “Welcome home! Welcome to my home! I am going to do all I can do for you. I am going to raise you just like my ten sons and daughters.”
“Am I going to become your 11th child?”
“Yes. You are my godson, Tijan. The only thing I ask is to work hard at the store and at school.”

Mr. Bonifas telephoned his wife to announce the news of Tijan’s arrival.
“Darling, I have news for you. Do you remember my godson who lives on top of the mountain of Léogâne?”
“Hello darling. Yes, I do. The mountain people who know have told me that she has no more strength to walk down to trade around here. She drinks too much tafia.”
“Aha! You know her very well.”
“She is a drunkard. She has other vices too. She smokes. No men want to stay with her too long. Did they ever find out who the father of her son is?”
“Cheri, darling. I can not answer this question.”
“Why not, honey?”

Once upon a time, a boy named Traka Pongongon decided to create stories everywhere he was running. That’s how his parents truly called him. Traka Pongongon lived according to his name. He did not deceive anybody because he knew how to create all kinds of trouble and misery for the residents of BellVille where he was living with his family. All the inhabitants of the town knew him very well. Traka Pongongon was always looking for opportunities to create trouble. Making mischief made him happy. However, because Traka’s parents were good standing residents of the town, the residents did not complain to them that much. Everyone respected Traka Pongongon’s parents because they were nice people. Mr. Tim Tim and Mrs. BwaSèch thought they had raised their son well. They did not know what had happened to him and what had made him change so drastically. They had great ideas about how to raise their children. After all, BelleVille was a little town were all adults raised all children.
When Traka Pongongon was ten, he became a very good soccer player. All the residents of BelleVille brought their kids to watch his matches. He was fast on the field. He passed the ball very well. Because Traka was running everywhere he was going, he was in good physical shape. He enjoyed participating in his P.E. classes. He always did his homework. He received good grades from his Math and Sciences tests. His teachers said he was a well-rounded student too.
Traka Pongongon enjoyed making up stories. Many people started to believe them because he was running every corner of the region. He saw everything that was going on in the other areas. Everybody respected him because he was a good athlete. And all the residents knew his parents too. But that did not prevent him from letting loose all the animals he encountered on his way.
“These animals need their freedom. They were not created to stay in one spot all the time.“ Traka never told anybody what he was up to while jogging around. That’s how goats, pigs, mules, horses, and donkeys ran down to the beach. Traka could not see an animal tied in a corral or under the shade of a tree. Then, he started running with the animals too. However, the owners of these animals, the farmers, could not get to know who was behind the release of their animals. They were not happy at all.
Dust rose when all these animals started running around. They were all running to one destination : the water hole that was close to the beach. When the owners of the animals did not find them where they had tied them, they started to look for them. That’s how, one after the other, the farmers went down to the water hole to reclaim their animals.
One day, after he had completed his homework, Traka decided to run downtown. On his way back home, he decided to drop by BelleVille beach. That is where he decided to imagine his next story.
On flatlands as well as over the hills, Traka was running and telling others about what he had just seen on BelleVille beach. He knew many people did not go to the market on Wednesdays. Wednesdays are market days. Mountain dwellers come downtown to sell their crops. That is why he ran to the market to see whether it was filled with merchants and shoppers. Egg merchants, fruit merchants, rice merchants, chicken merchants, meat merchants, junk food merchants, fried food merchants, fish merchants, peanut merchants, peanut butter merchants, bean merchants, and plantain merchants arrived early at the market. They have started selling their merchandise under their tent. Everything one wanted could be found there. For the way the market was filled with people¸Traka knew he had chosen a good day to tell his tale. He could not wait to encounter somebody before he could inform him/her of his huge event.
« While I was on BelleVille beach, I witnessed a huge whale that got stranded there. It was so big that there was no sand left uncovered. The whale rested on the rocks, sand, and beach chairs. »
That is what Traka was telling everybody he encountered. He was telling children as well as adults. Everybody wanted to see this huge whale. They ran down to the beach to see it. These people called their friends on their cell phones. One group of friends telephoned another group of friends. In no time, the news went viral. Various groups of people were running down to the beach. All of a sudden, children as well as grownups were running with so much excitement.
Traka Pongongon hid his laughter. He did not want to let anybody see him laughing. Nonetheless, he continued to announce the news of the huge whale that got stranded on the beach. Since he started his chain of announcement, he could not know how many people were following them. Others who met him started to give him the same breaking news too.
« Hey, you did not hear about this. There is a huge whale that got stranded on the beach. Do you want to come help us push it back to the ocean ? » they said to him. Traka did not realize that he too would receive the same breaking news from others. Did he start to believe his own story ?
Traka met people who were coming back from the market. He shared the same news with them. When he got to the middle of the market, he summoned all his courage and strength to deliver this message :
« Listen up. Listen up. Everybody, listen up. There is a huge whale that landed on the beach. It is so huge that it takes over the whole beach. There is no swimmer who can get in there. Nobody can swim there ! I saw it with my own eyes. There are many people who are working hard to help it. We need more people to help push it back into the ocean. If you do not hurry up, you may not have time to see it. »
Traka did not even finish his speech that his listeners started running down to the beach. All of them were interested in the story of the huge stranded whale. Traka was running with them too. In no time, the market was no more. Vendors as well as shoppers left at once. Almost all the clients, the regular customers left what they were doing to go see the whale. There were merchants who lost money because the customers started running away with their money in their pockets.
As I was passing by the empty market, I heard the news too. I started running with the rest of all the spectators. But as there were many people on the beach, people started pushing people who were pushing the whale back into the ocean. While we were all there, a huge wave came in and covered the body of the whale. The whale raised its head and looked at everybody. Everyone ran away from it or moved back. They saw it had only one eye. They pushed a huge roar as they got submerged. The huge wave got them all wet. At the same time, the whale breathed and started shaking its massive body. It flapped and threw water. It started swimming away. When the whale got deep enough in the ocean, it dove. Then, the next thing I saw was only the tail of the whale.
Until now there are people who keep saying that there was no whale that landed and rested on the beach. All in all, there were more people who did not have any chance to see it than those who did see it.
While the people who got wet were drying up their clothes, I ran like Pongongon did in order to tell you this beautiful story.

Haitian Creole orthography follows its pronunciation. It is composed mostly of these sounds: a, ay, an, b, ch, d, e, è, en, f, g, h, I, j, k, l, m, n, ng/y, o, ò, on, ou, oun, p, r, s, t, ui, v, w, y, z
There are no mute letters in Kreyòl
Haitian Creole: Vowels
Non Nasal Vowels: a, e, è, i, o, ou, à, ay
Nasal Vowels: an, en, on, ann, in
a is pronounced like “a” in cat, mat, Pat etc.
à followed by a consonant is pronounced separately. An Pàn (broken down)
an is pronounced like the first sound found in English words Van-n (van), pan-n (pan) etc.
e is pronounced like the sound of “ay” as in say, lay, stay
è is pronounced like the sound of “et” as in wet, vet, get, let
en is pronounced like the sound produced by “en” as in garden, den
i is pronounced like the sound of “ee” as in see, peep, meet
o is prounounced like the sound of “ow” as in low, grow, row
ò pronounced like the sound of “o” as in bore, sore, more etc
on pronounced like the sound of “oun” as in young, Don Corleon
ou pronounced like the sound of “ou” as in you, route etc.

On New Year’s Eve And Haiti’s Independence Celebration

Everybody is getting ready to carouse, celebrate and have a great time. Christmas is over. All the children have already received their presents. Adults do not have much time to rest. They must go shopping for January 1 and January 2, two major Haitian holidays. Whether they are fortunate or not, all Haitians wear their best outfit on these two days. Children get up very early to wish their parents “Happy New Year.” And they know they are going to have good chocolate and special bread. By noon, they are going to start having pumpkin soup with all kinds of meat, taro root, potato, and vegetables. Wow! It is a big deal!

There are activities everywhere in the village. Residents take advantage of the moonlight to walk to end-of-the-year vigils where they can dance and eat midnight meals. Many churches organize special services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. On December 24, church faithful participate in Christmas programs that show how Jesus was born. After that, the church leaders served foods and beverages to all congregants. Every year, residents of the community expect to eat without charge on these occasions. To realize these Christmas celebrations, churches often receive special gifts from the church children who are living overseas or the church sponsors. As soon as Christmas is over, Haitians start planning their January 1 and January 2 parties.

That is not the only thing they are thinking about. Haitians who are not affiliated with a church go to peristyle to take part in their own ceremonies. They produce all kinds of music. They play huge as well as small drums. The voodoo priests serve their spirits. They trace designs on the grounds. They place special food items on the ground for the spirits they are serving. Many participants end up being possessed by the spirits. They turn around and jump. They dance. They lift their feet rendered heavy wit alcohol. They are very drunk. They have consumed a lot of tequila, rum and other alcoholic beverages. The spirits make them walk on fire barefootedly, break bottles with their bare hands and make them crawl on their belly and back. It is a funny thing that they do not get burned or injured. There are participants who are in the ceremony only to go around with women. On this occasion, you have to learn with all kinds of drum beats, noise and songs that spring from everywhere, in flatlands as well as mountaintops.

What do Haitians like to do to celebrate their independence day?

Many Haitians choose to do other things too. If they can play or appreciate music, they go to dancehalls downtown, on Delmas Road or Petionville. Big bands organize huge dance parties. Those who want to participate pay entrance fees. Some Haitians play piano, guitar, trumpet, flute, harmonica, drums, saxophone, cymbals and chacha. We can see all the beverages Haitians can consume in these dance parties. Haitian-made Barbancourt Rhum is a big deal for those who can afford it.

There are Haitians who go to the movie theaters to see movies. If they do not go out, they stay home to listen to music on the radio. They may watch TV too. Most of the times, those who live in cities that have electricity take more advantage. At times, blackouts prevent them from participating in routine activities or programs. Mountain people go to dances too. If they are not churchgoers, they go bet on fighting cocks in the cockpit. Just like in the Philippines and the Dominican Republic, fighting roosters receive a special treatment. The owners of these cocks treat them or take care of them like athletes. They make them do exercises. They take vitamins and clean water. However, the owners file their spurs which allow them to kill their opponents easily in the cockpit. Adults tell stories. There are many friends who gather together just to tell jokes. They tell folktales and riddles.

From New Year’s Eve till January 2, all Haitians find all kinds of entertainment. They may play cards, domino, checkers or hole. Kids play bones and hopscotch too. During all this time, they eat and drink Cream, rum, tequila, juice and water. When they get tired, they go to bed. They only wake up to start making plans of Carnival that arrives soon.

There are lots of activities in everybody’s house. People are checking and repairing holes on the roof or the structure of their homes. They are nailing boards. Everybody is walking everywhere. They are confused and afraid. They are shopping for their home. They are buying everything. They need gas, flashlight, matches and lamps. Many of them are very surprised by the rising costs of ordinary items. What are mother and father (parents) to do in such a situation? They must feed their kids.

After the quake destroyed homes, there are not too many homes left standing, which can withstand the wind-packed forces of a hurricane. Until now, there are many Haitians who are living in tent camps, in dwellings made of cardboard, sticks and covered with cloth. They are hot when it is hot. They are wet when it is raining. They lose all their possessions when it is very windy. The sanitary conditions are not good. You can find trash and bluish water everywhere. They are living like refugees in foreign countries. Yet, they are home (in their homeland). The camps are filled with people who can not do much to improve their situation. They lack tools and materials. They do not have money to buy these supplies either. National and international organizations are trying to help the residents of these camps. Without any doubt, the Haitian government appreciates this assistance a lot.

All of a sudden, the residents of these camps are supposed to find better shelter to stay away from the hurricane’s path and shake. Where do you think they are going to find better shelter in which to stay out of the rain and hurricane?

Authorities stated that people can find shelter in churches and schools. Many of these buildings are not close to the camp residents. Ready or not, the rain and hurricane wind brought by Tomas will not wait for anybody.

After this hurricane, there will be many other hurricanes. The question we need to ask is when liveable homes will be ready for these quake survivors, or when they will stop living in these deplorable conditions. Many Haitians are complaining that the government-provided homes were built by builders who only cared about making money or those who never care about providing a good finished product. They are wondering why these dwellings can not withstand a hurricane’s strength.

Haiti has many trade professionals that are ready to work. They are ready to build homes, but people do not have money. Many first-world countries such as the U.S.A made pledges after the quake, but they have not been able to deliver the money yet.

All these trade people want to work. Cabinetmakers want to make furniture such as beds, chairs and tables. Blacksmith want to work in wrought iron for verandas. Carpenters can no t wait to go to the work site to do carpentry work. Cutlery experts want to do their thing too. Shoemakers would like to find good-paying jobs repairing shoes too. With employment, people can earn more money. They can buy better-looking clothes and suits that tailors design. All beautiful and proud Haitian women can go negotiate and chat with their designers. Haitians are more interested in building their homes. They are not used to sleeping outside like horses and other animals. Being exposed to the elements makes children and grownups sick. And if they are already sick, they can not recover quickly. That is why masons need to pour concrete, build walls and homes. Cabinet makers need to make doors, windows, and other wooden decorations Haitians enjoy putting in their homes. Those who are building their homes must be prudent to avoid being the prey of bad builders who are only interested in making money or taking advantage.

Hasta ahora, hay muchos Haitianos que siguen viviendo en campamento de carpas, en moradas de cartón y de palos cubiertos con tela. Tienen calor cuando hace calor. Son mojados cuando está lluviendo. Pierden todas sus posesiones cuando hay viento. Las condiciones sanitarias no son buenas. Pueden encontrar basura y agua azulada por todas partes. Viven como si fueron refugiados en territorios extranjeros. Sin embargo viven en su país (Son pocos de los resultados del terremoto del 12 de Enero de 2010!). Los encampamentos de carpas están llenos de residentes que no pueden hacer nada para ameliorar su situación. Les faltan herramientas y utensilios. Tampoco no tienen dinero para comprar estos utensilios. Las organizaciones nacionales e internacionales intentan de ayudar a los residentes de estos encampamentos. Sin duda, el gobierno Haitiano agradece, aprecia esta ayuda mucho.

De repente, los residentes de estos encampamentos tienen que encontrar mejor abrigo contra la trayectoria y las sacudidas del huracán. En donde piensan que ellos van a encontrar mejor protección para quedarse fuera de la lluvia y del huracán?

Las autoridades indicaron que los residentes pueden encontrar abrigo en las iglesias y escuelas. Muchos de estos edificios no están cerca de los residentes en los encampamentos. Listos o no, la lluvia y el viento traidos por Tomás no van a esperar a nadie.

Después de este huracán, Tomás, más huracanes van a ocurir. La pregunta que debemos hacer es cuando casas van a estar listas para los supervivientes, damnificados del temblor de tierra o cuando van a parar de vivir en estas condiciones lamentables. Muchos Haitianos se quejan de que las cajitas temporales proveidas por el gobierno fueron construidas por constructores que se enteresaban solo en ganar dinero o a ellos no les importó proveer un buen producto. Se piden porque estas viviendas no pueden resistir las fuerzas de un huracán.

Haiti tiene muchos profesionales que estan listos para trabajar. Estan listos para construir casas. Sin embargo las personas no tienen plata. Muchos paises desarollados tales como los EE.UU prometieron ayuda financiera tras el temblor de tierra pero todavia no pueden entregar el dinero.

Todos estos profesionales quieren trabajar. Los ebanistas quieren construir mueble tales como camas, sillas y mesas. Herreros quieren hacer trabajo en hierro forjado para terraza o veranda. Los carpinteros ya no pueden esperar y quieren ir al campo de trabajo para conducir su trabajo de carpintería. Zapateros quisieran encontrar buen empleo para reparar zapatos tambien. Con el empleo, las personas pueden ganar más dinero. Pueden comprar ropas y trajes bonitos producidos por sastres. Todas las muchachas Haitianas bonitas y orgullosas pueden negociar y charlar con sus sastras. Los Haitianos se enteresan más en construir sus casas. No suelen dormir al aire libre como caballos y los demás animales. Ser expuesto a los elementos en el medio ambiente hace enfermar a los chicos y adultas. Y si ya estan enfermos, no pueden curar. Por esta razón, los albañiles necesitan vaciar concreto, levantar un muro y construir viviendas. Los ebanistas necesitan hacer puertas, ventanas y otras decoraciones que a los Haitianos les gusta poner en sus casas. Los que construyen sus casas tienen que prestar la atención para evitar a los constructores malos quienes se enteresan solamente en hacer dinero y aprovecharse de los demás.

Vwayèl Kreyol – Creole Vowels

a – auh, like in Cat (chat), bat (chauvesouri, to beat, to defeat), glass (vit) like in papa – dad; marasa – twins or jimo /jimel - twins
e - ay (1st 1/2 of long a in say) like in Kreyol ‘Ki jan ou ye? (how are you?)
è - eh (e in let, bet) Kreyol: Talò = Talè – in a few, in a short time, Vòlè - thief
i - ee (ee in see, week, seed)
o - o (1st 1/2 of long o in go) ; like in Kreyol ‘Dodo’ – baby talk for sleep
ò - (o in or, bore, core) like in Kreyol ‘kò’ – body; lò - gold
ay - i (i in ice, lice, rice) say ‘kay – house, bay – to give’
ou - oo (o in move, movie)

U is always used in combination with ou – (you), moun – person as in ‘granmoun – adult, grownup and timoun – child’ or in french-based words such as sèu / sè – sister

Nasal Sounds

an – like in Kreyol ‘kann – cane, ban – bench, ann – let’s)
ekzanp: dan (tooth, teeth), Jan (John)

en – like ‘en’ in

Ekzanp: mwen (me, I, my), Mennen – to lead
on – like ‘on’ in don't
Ekzanp: savon (soap), bonbon –sweet or any type of candies

in like in kreyol ‘machi-n – car, vehicle

"c" and "h" are only used in the "ch" combination
